The last time the Tampa Bay Lighting faced the Ottawa Senators, the Senators were able to get a 5-3 home win. In this game, there was a scary moment for the Lighting and goalie Ben Bishop. Bishop was just recently traded from the Ottawa Senators and was making his first appearance against his old team when he came out of the net far to defend a play and got kicked in the head by his own teammate. Bishop lied motionless on the ice before skating off on his own. That scenario broke the scoring for the game when Marc Methot took advantage of a wide open net for a goal.
The next goal of the period would come from Erik Karlsson, who received a pass from Milan Michalek. Karlsson got a jump on the defense and by time he received the pass, he was alone in front of a wide-open net to put the Senators up by two. Early in the second period the Lighting got the puck over to Alex Killorn, and he picked up the puck and burned goalie Craig Anderson with a nice move to cut the lead in half. That would be the last goal of the period for the Lighting. Just a few minutes later, Zack Smith put in an unassisted goal, and with 18:40 left, Kyle Turris, assisted by Bobby Ryan, scored another goal giving the Senators a 4-1 lead.
In the third period, Kyle Turris and Bobby Ryan would hook up again with Ryan putting in a goal. The Lighting would start to form a comeback in the second half of the third period, when Tyler Johnson scored a shorthanded goal at 12:54 in the third and Victor Hedman put one in at 17:08. But both goals came in too late.
