The only other time that the St. Louis Blues and the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against each other this season, the Blues were able to dominate from start to finish thanks in large part to three early goals. The first place Blues made it look easy in this game, while the Maple Leafs looked sluggish in the loss.

David Backes, Jaden Schwartz and Derek Roy all scored in the first period. In the second, Chris Stewart added another goal for the home team just 29 seconds into the period to make it 4-0. Nazem Kadri was able to get one back for Toronto a little over a minute later. The Blues' top scorer Alexander Steen made it 5-1 seven minutes into the third, but Toronto was able to bring it within two through scores by Nikolai Kulemin and James van Riemsdyk. Backes was able to kill off the game, though, with an empty net goal late in the third for his second on the night.

Schwartz finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Steen finished with a goal and an assist. Backes matched his point total from last season and was able to do it in 18 fewer games.

Even though his team won, Blues goalie Brian Elliott had one of his worst performances of the season. He made 19 saves, but he allowed three to get past him for a save percentage of just .864.
