The Sharks and the Islanders last played on December 10th with the Islanders winning 3-2 in a shoot out. Before this game the Islanders were on a ten game slide and desperately needed a win against the Sharks. New York needed every minute of this game to pull out the win, and until half-way through the third period it did not look like they would beat the Sharks.

San Jose had a solid 2-0 lead all the way through the start of the third period until Thomas Vanek and Kyle Okposo of the Islanders scored quickly and knotted up the game at 2-2. The Islanders goalie, Kevin Poulin, managed 46 saves during the game which included stopping three of four shots during the game’s shootout. The San Jose Sharks out-shot the Islanders for the majority of the game, but could not get the puck past Poulin. Okposo was then able to get past the Sharks goalie during the shootout for the 3-2 victory.

The New York Islanders are dead last in the Metropolitan Division and only have accumulated fifty nine points for a playoff spot this season. The San Jose Sharks currently have second place locked up in the Pacific Division and are a full seven points ahead of Los Angeles in the standings.
