Ben Scrivens had the goaltending performance of the 2013-2014 season thus far when the Edmonton Oilers last took on the San Jose Sharks. Not only did he get a 3-0 shutout for his new team, he saved 59 of the Sharks' shots along the way. In doing so, he set the NHL regular season record for saves made in a shutout.
San Jose played well enough to win, but they just could not get the puck past Scrivens. Edmonton took 27 shots in the game, which was 33 fewer than their opponents. Taylor Hall was Edmonton's other top performer in the game with a goal and an assist for the home team. Justin Schultz and Jordan Eberle provided the other two goals for the hosts.
Scrivens broke the expansion-era shutout record that was set in 2012 by Phoenix Coyote goalie Mike Smith, who saved 54 shots against Columbus in a 2-0 win. It was a season high amount of shots taken by the Sharks, who matched their team record for shots in a game, which they also did back in 1993 in a 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers.
The loss didn't hurt the Sharks too much, as they maintained their lead in the Pacific Division. Edmonton stayed near the bottom of the standings even with the win, but it was certainly a game that the team will never forget thanks to the amazing performance by their goaltender.
