Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins will travel north to face the Toronto Maple Leafs. The two teams will be seeing each other for the first time this season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t sharp in their season opener against the Anaheim Ducks. But they managed to escape with a 6 -4 win despite blowing a huge lead early on. Pittsburgh jumped out to a 3 – 0 lead in the 1st period and the game looked like it would be a rout. But Anaheim rallied back. With 3 straight goals from the end of the 1st to the middle of the 2nd, the Ducks got back in the game. Pittsburgh re-established their lead with 2 goals to end the 2nd period and the added a 6th goal in the 3rd to seal the win. But Pittsburgh won’t be successful this season if they can’t hold leads and expect to score 6 goals. The Penguins should have an easier time against the Maple Leafs.
Toronto started strong but faded down the stretch in their last game against the Montreal Canadiens, losing 4 - 3. After going down 1 - 0 in the 1st, Toronto scored 2 unanswered to take a 2 -1 lead at the end of the period. Montreal tied the game in the 2nd, took the lead in the 3rd. The Leafs tied the game in the 3rd but with just 43 seconds left in regulation, Montreal got the go ahead goal. Toronto admittedly couldn’t keep up the pace late in the game and will look to avoid a late breakdown against the Penguins. A complete game from the Leafs could get them their 1st victory of the season.
