The New York Rangers avoided elimination and dominated the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals 5-1 on Friday night and closed the Penguins' lead in the series to 3-2. The Penguins had four opportunities on the power play in the game, but the Rangers keep them from converting any of them.

The Rangers were able to score the first goal of the game nine minutes into the first period through a Chris Kreider power-play tally. They then doubled their lead later in the period when Derick Brassard scored his second playoff goal.

Evgeni Malkin got the Penguins back in the game when he scored his sixth goal of the playoffs three minutes into the second period, but Brassard was able to answer a few minutes later to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. Ryan McDonagh made it 4-1 when he scored on the power play a minute later, and then Kevin Klein put the Penguins away late in the third period to extend the series.

Brassard had two goals and an assist for New York, while right wing Mats Zuccarello finished with three assists in the win. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist had an excellent night in goal for the visitors by stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury also had a pretty good game by stopping 30 of the Rangers' 34 shots.
