The last time the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Colorado Avalanche saw each other, the two teams were a combined 15-2-0 and looking like two of the best teams in the NHL. Colorado was able to pull off the 1-0 win, but the game could easily could have gone the other way as Pittsburgh had a 34-14 shot on goal advantage.
The game was hyped up more than the ordinary NHL game because it was the first meeting between Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. Both players are from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, and many fans think MacKinnon could reach Crosby's superstar status someday. Both players played well in the game, but neither could get on the score sheet in this one.
The lone goal of the game came in the second period when Colorado forward Gabriel Landeskog scored his third of the season off of assists from Ryan Wilson and Cory Sarich. Landeskog was coming out of the penalty box when he received the pass and was able to beat Penguins' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with a wrister.
Landeskog may have scored the game-winner, but the real hero for the Avalanche on the night was goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The 36-year-old veteran had a 34-save night and his second shutout of the season.
The win helped the Avalanche improve to 8-1-0, while the Penguins dropped just their second game of the season.
