Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit the First Niagara Center to take on the Buffalo Sabres.
The Pittsburgh Penguins blew a decent lead in their Thursday night game in Winnipeg and needed a shootout to come away with a 4 -3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets took the 1 - 0 lead midway through the 1st period but the Penguins responded with a goal in the 1st and 2 more in the 2nd to take a seemingly commanding 3 -1 lead. But Winnipeg wouldn’t go away. The Jets got a goal to close out the 2nd and notched the only goal of the 3rd to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the Jets got the first goal but the Pens scored the last 2 to get the win. The Penguins were fortunate to get their 6th straight win considering the fact that they not only blew the lead, they also uncharacteristically went 0 for 5 on the power play. Their power play will be tested against a solid Buffalo penalty killing unit.
The Buffalo Sabres will come into this one after playing the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. The Sabres are already playing subpar hockey and having to play back to back games won’t help them turn things around. Even though Friday and Saturday’s games are at home, that won’t be much comfort for the Sabres. They have played poorly at home and probably won’t get much of a spark from the home crowd if they fall behind early to a very good Penguins team.
