The Washington Capitals visited the Phoenix Coyotes on Nov. 9 of last year in what turned out to be an overtime thriller. The Coyotes were able to slip one past the Capitals and defend their home ice by a score of 4-3. The Coyotes were resilient on this night. With a late score by Shane Doan, Phoenix was able to tie the game up in regulation. With no overtime scoring, the Coyotes were able to score on both attempts in the shootout. One goal came from Antoine Vermette and the other came from Mikkel Boedker.
It looked like Washington was going to steal one in Phoenix on this night when they went up 3-1 off of three straight goals in the second period. Troy Brouwer, John Carlson, and Joel Ward scored for the Capitals in the second period. Phoenix had gotten themselves into trouble as both of the first two goals scored by the Capitals were power play goals.
In the end, Phoenix continued to play and fought through what looked like a loss at home.
Phoenix and Washington have split over their last four times playing each other since 2010 with the home team winning all four of these matchups. Since late January, the Coyotes have lost all three away games they've played and haven't fared much better at home as they're sitting under .500 for that period in time. The Capitals are hovering around .500 in that same time period with most of their wins coming on their home ice.
