The Pittsburgh Penguins have done well against the Pacific Division all season, but the Phoenix Coyotes were able to beat them 3-1 on home ice the last time they faced each other. It was the first time the Penguins lost in regulation against a team in that division this season.
After Mike Ribeiro scored the first team for the hosts, Zbynek Michalek was able to get a goal of his own against his former teammates. This was the first time that Michalek had scored a goal in two years and that goal happened to be for the Penguins and against the Coyotes.
Evgeni Malkin scored his 16th goal of the season late in the third period, but Radim Vrbata answered early in the third to secure the win for Phoenix.
Coyotes goalie Mike Smith didn't have a very busy night, but he was able to stop 23 of the 24 shots he faced and earned the first star. Ribeiro ended up with a goal and an assist on the night.
What seemed to help the Coyotes win the game was their physicality and solid defense throughout the contest. They out-hit the Penguins 26-18, but stayed disciplined and were only put on the penalty kill twice. It also must have helped that they sold out their stadium for only the second time on the season, which seemed to energize their players.
