The Phoenix Coyotes and the New York Rangers last met back on the opening day of the season when the Coyotes were able to pull off the 4-1 home win. The hero of the night was right winger Radim Vrbata, who started his season in style with his fifth career hat trick.

In front of a packed house and their new owners, the Coyotes were able to to get on the board early in the first period thanks to Kyle Chipchura's goal. That lead lasted until three minutes into the second period when Marc Staal scored a power-play goal for the Rangers. From then on, it was all Vrbata. The forward scored his first goal in the middle of the second period after New York missed multiple chances on the power play. His second was a power-play goal early in the third. He finished off his hat trick in the middle of the third, which put the game to bed.

Phoenix goalie Mike Smith didn't have much to do in the game thanks to the Coyotes' defense, but he did make multiple saves on the penalty kill to keep his team's advantage intact. He ended up with 23 saves on the night, but none were bigger than the one he made with his mid-section against Benoit Pouliot in the second period to keep the sides level.

Phoenix had 30 penalty minutes to the Rangers' 18, but they had 12 more shots on goal.
