The New York Rangers were able to take a 1-0 series lead when they beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 at home on Thursday. Center Brad Richards was the top performer for the Rangers, while their defense was able to keep the Flyers from scoring for two and a half periods.
The Flyers were actually the first ones to score in the game when defenseman Andrew MacDonald was able to get his slap shot past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist seven minutes into the first period. Mats Zuccarello was able to answer for the Rangers three minutes later, though, off of assists from Benoit Pouliot and Marc Staal.
After no goals were scored by either team in the second period, Richards was able to give New York the lead on a power-play goal eight minutes into the third. Less than a minute later, center Derek Stepan made it 3-1 with a power-play tally of his own. Left wing Hagelin put the game away with five minutes left in the period when he was able to get his shot past Lundqvist.
Richards, who had a forgettable playoff run last season, had a great game with a goal and an assist. Trade deadline acquisition Martin St. Louis pitched in with two assists. Lundqvist only ended up having to make 14 saves in the game, but he still had a .933 save percentage.
Flyers goalie Ray Emery made 32 saves in the loss.
