Wednesday night, the Philadelphia flyers will take the ice at the Joe Louis Arena as they face the Detroit Red Wings. 

The Philadelphia Flyers defense played as well as they possibly could in their Monday night game against the New York Islanders.  But the offense faltered as they ended up losing 1 -0 in a shootout.   The Flyers couldn’t light the lamp at all in any of the three regulation periods but fortunately, neither could the Islanders. A scoreless overtime period led to a shootout and that’s where the puck finally ended up in the net.  But it was the Islanders that were able to finally score and their 2 goals in the shootout earned them the win.  Flyers goalie Steve Mason got the shutout but it was little consolation for a team that has lost 5 of their last 6 games. The Flyers offense only managed 21 shots on goal the entire game and they will need more than that if they want to get past the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings withstood a late rally by the Ottawa Senators to hold on for a 4 - 3 win on Monday night.  The Senators got the first goal of the game but Detroit’s Gustav Nyquist tied it up late in the period.   The Red Wings took over in the 2nd as they took the lead on a Riley Sheahan goal and extended that lead to 4 – 1 thanks to back to back goals from Stephen Weiss.  But Ottawa added some drama by scoring twice in the final period, including a last second goal that made it a 4 - 3 game.  The Red Wings outshot the Senators 43 to 26 and went 2 for 6 on the power play but the late defensive lapses could have cost them.   If they play like that against the Flyers, they could end up on the losing end.
