Despite Ottawa's 44 shots on goal compared to Montreal's 23, Ottawa was still unable to keep the Canadiens from forcing overtime and stealing a victory of 5-4 the last time these two teams met. Carey Price for Montreal had 40 saves, much of which came in the second and third period. His outstanding play frustrated most of the Senators, leaving them wondering what else they could do to get something passed him.

The first period saw more goals than what most games see throughout all three periods. Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais both scored in the first for Montreal, while Max Pacioretty also scored by taking advantage of a Senators' penalty. However, late in the first, Ottawa came alive with two goals by Clarke MacArthur and Erik Karlsson, both of which were less than two minutes apart.

The second period was back-in-forth until late in the period when Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris scored in almost the same fashion as Ottawa's first period scores; late in the period and less than two minutes apart. But midway through the third, Tomas Plekanec came through again with his second goal of the game to tie it up and eventually send it into overtime. The overtime period did not last long. P.K. Subban manged to trickle a goal passed Craig Anderson to end the game within 23 seconds.

Despite the loss, the Senators did not play bad, they just came up against a brick-wall in the net and had a hard time finding any weaknesses in Carey Price's game.
