In the middle of their best winning stretch of the year, the New York Rangers came into the Canadian Tire Centre to beat the Ottawa Senators with a 4-1 victory when these two squared off last. Stat wise the game was close – shots on goal, hits, face-offs were almost dead even, but the Senators gave the Rangers four power-play opportunities to their zero, although the Rangers only capitalized on one.
Early in the game, the Senators grabbed a quick 1-0 lead with a goal by Marc Methot that got pushed right through Graig Anderson, who had 26 saves on the game. Mistakes and giveaways proved costly for the Senators. A power-play midway through the first would lead to a goal by Brad Richards that tied the game up. Early in the second, Derek Stepan of the Rangers passed the puck up to Rick Nash who found himself alone against Anderson. Nash put a shot in up high that bounced off the cross-bar and went in. After that, Stepan found himself in a fortunate situation when a play went bad for Erik Karlasson. A pass from behind the net ended up on Stepan's stick out in front and he slammed it home for another Rangers goal.
The third period showed signs of a sluggish Senators team that just could not keep up. A turnover late in the third by Chris Phillips gave Mats Zuccarello the puck near center ice where he managed to break in alone on Anderson. Anderson lost the battle when Zuccarello put a slight move on him and shot the puck right to the back of the net to end the game.
