In a game between two teams on opposite ends of the Eastern Conference standings, the New York Islanders were able to pull off the upset by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 the last time these two teams saw each other. Both goalies played very well in the matchup, but the hero of the night was Frans Nielsen, who gave the Islanders the win with the lone shootout goal.

The Lightning got off to a good start, scoring five minutes into the first period thanks to a Martin St. Louis power-play goal. After some good defense and goaltending by both teams, Thomas Vanek got New York back into the game with a power-play goal of his own. Victor Hedman, who played in his 300th game in this one, just about gave the Lightning the lead late in the third period, but his shot clanged off the post.

Tampa Bay almost took the lead in the shootout when Valtteri Filppula beat Islanders goalie Kevin Poulin, but his shot hit off of the post. Nielsen, who also had an assist on the Vanek goal, was the second man to shoot in the shootout and made the most of his opportunity. Poulin kept the Lightning from tying it up and Tampa Bay got a nice upset victory.

Both Poulin and the Lightning's Ben Bishop had 29 saves in the game.
