There's not much left to play for with just two games remaining for the Islanders, although officially eliminating the neighbor Devils from the playoffs might be a nice way to wrap up the year and head into the off-season. New Jersey has minimal opportunity left to capture the #8 seed in the East and they might be out of the hunt by the time the puck drops.

Both teams will be playing on the second end of back-to-back scheduling so travel advantage doesn't really favor either squad. Both teams fly into the Prudential Center after visits to Canada Thursday night, the Islanders playing in Montreal and New Jersey battling Ottawa. The Islanders had been battling strong when a playoff berth was in sight by winning 5 of 6 but soon dropped 3 in a row to put a cap in their 2013/14 season.

The Devils have an extremely outside chance at making the postseason, needing to win all of their remaining games and have Washington and Columbus suffer a complete disaster. That being said, a playoff run seems unlikely, especially as New Jersey won only 5 of 10 games from March 20th until April 7th.

Friday night marks the 5th meeting of the season between the Islanders and Devils and will also serve as the rubber match of the series with each team winning twice. The teams met up twice in New York over the course of March with New Jersey losing in a shootout 1-2 on March 29th and capturing a 6-1 win on March 1st.
