The Montreal Canadiens were able to get the shutout the last time they played the New York Islanders when they pulled off the 1-0 road win. The game featured one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference against one of the worst teams in the NHL, but it was actually a close game and the Canadiens depended heavily on their net-minder to get the job done.
That game was made for the old school hockey fans who enjoy good defense and hard hitting throughout. The Islanders ended up outhitting Montreal 31-17 in the game, but the Canadiens were able to get more shots on goal.
Both teams had their chances on the power play, but the two goalies were up for the task through all three periods of regulation.
In the overtime period, Montreal left wing Max Pacioretty was able to score the winner off a nice assist from David Desharnais at the 1:51 mark. Desharnais was able to slip to the side of the net where he found Pacioretty up front, who calmly put the puck past New York goalie Evgeni Nabokov.
Nabokov ended up with 24 saves in the loss, but his .960 save percentage shows that he more than deserved a win. Montreal's goalie Carey Price was perfect on the night, stopping all 21 of the Islanders' shots to notch his 21st career shutout.
The Canadiens lead the season series 2-0 going into the third and final meeting with the Islanders on Thursday.
