In their last meeting, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 3-2 thanks in large part to two goals that were scored within a minute of each other in the second period. Much of the praise had to go to Hurricanes' goalie Anton Khudobin, though, as he made 38 saves on the night and kept the Islanders from tying the game in the third period.

After Manny Malhotra and John Tavares scored for their respective teams early in the second period, Jordan Staal gave the Hurricanes the lead at the 13:12 mark. Less than 60 seconds later, the Hurricanes doubled their lead with a rare goal from defenseman Brett Sutter. It was only Sutter's second career goal and it ended up being the game winner.

Thomas Vanek brought the Isles to within one with just 24 seconds left in the game, but the Hurricanes were able to keep them from getting the tying goal.

The Islanders dominated the game for the most part, getting 40 shots on goal to the Hurricanes' 30, but Khudobin dealt with just about everything they threw at him. The win gave the Canes' backup goalie a 4-0 record and made the loss of starter Cam Ward not hurt as bad.

This was a big win for Carolina because they were able to do it for the most part without captain Eric Staal on the ice. He was injured early on in the game and didn't return.
