New York picked up after the Olympic break with a win but immediately lost their next two. Not to be outdone, Calgary dropped their first two out of 3 after the Sochi intermission. So goes the season for two teams that are likely looking forward to the dropping of the puck for the 2014/15 season already. Calgary is mired into second to last place in the Pacific, trailing Minnesota by 22 points for the 8th spot in the West. The Islanders would actually take that record as they're in dead last but still only 14 points behind Detroit for a playoff berth.
When two mediocre teams get together, somebody has to win and that's just what Calgary pulled off with a 4-2 victory in New York a little over a month ago. In that game the Flames got on board first in the 2nd period with Sean Monahan scoring a goal at 14:15 followed by a Dennis Wideman power play goal at 18:08. The Islanders were able to salvage a chance at victory with a Thomas Hickey goal 7 seconds before the 2nd period ended.
It took the Islanders 7 minutes into the third period but they tied the score up at 2-2. The rest of the scoring would be all Calgary though with goals at 14:28 and an empty netter with :03 left. Over bettors were cheering that empty net goal as it was able to push the total of 5.5 to their winning side. Those who took Calgary on the money line were pleasantly rewarded with a +147 payout.
The Islanders will be coming off a game Thursday night against Edmonton and are in game 3 of 4 on their Canadian tour. Calgary has a back to back matchup themselves, heading to Vancouver at the immediate conclusion of this game.
