On Thursday, the New Jersey Devils will be taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have won four out of their last five games. During the 2013-14 season, the Maple Leafs won two out of their three games against the Devils.
The Devils lost their fifth game in a row on Tuesday night when the Pittsburgh Penguins shut them out 1-0 on the road. They had their chances on the power play in that game, but they ended up coming away goalless on four opportunities with the extra man.
So far this season, the Devils have only been able to score 2.3 goals per game. Netminder Cory Schneider has had a pretty good start to the year by going 9-11-3 with two shutouts, a 2.52 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
On Tuesday night, the Maple Leafs won their second consecutive game when they defeated the Dallas Stars 5-3 at home. They put 40 shots on goal in that game and their penalty kill didn't allow a goal on Dallas' five power play chances.
The Maple Leafs have one of the better offenses in the league through their first 24 games by notching 3.4 goals per game. Right wing Phil Kessel has clearly been their best offensive contributor by scoring 12 goals and providing an assist on 14 others. Goalie Jonathan Bernier is 9-5-3 with one shutout and a .917 save percentage.
