New Jersey goalie, Martin Brodeur came through with a game the Devils needed in a desperate way the last time these two teams met. Brodeur had 19 saves to carry the Devils to a 3-0 shutout. That was Brodeur's third of the season and 124th of his career. This game should make coach Pete DeBoer's decision easy, as he was on a search to find a starting goaltender to take on most of the playing time.

The game started out slow with no scores in the first period. But a little more than midway through the second, rookie defenseman Eric Gelinas made a pass that came up the middle and in front of Damien Brunner just before the blue line. Brunner got past two defenders for a breakaway goal, skating to his left and then pushing a forehand that slipped passed Anders Lindback for the score. The Lighting tried to wear down Brodeur in the second period, out-shooting the Devils 14-5, but the effort was diminished by his solid play in goal.

The third period brought another star out for the Devils. Dainius Zubrus scored two goals in the period, the first assisted by Jaromir Jagr and the other assisted by both Jagr and Marek Zidlicky. The Devils were 3-for-3 in penalty killing in the game against the Lighting, giving them the best penalty kill percentage in the NHL at .933. Both teams found themselves in penalty killing situations, but neither team was able to capitalize on the advantages in this game.
