The New Jersey Devils and the Ottawa Senators, currently three points apart in the Eastern Conference standings, last played in mid-December when the Devils were able to pull off the 5-2 win. New Jersey was able to take the lead early in the game and were never up by less than two goals after the first period as they cruised for the win.

Stephen Gionta scored New Jersey's first goal in the game just two minutes into the action with a shorthanded tally. Ten minutes later, rookie center Reid Boucher doubled the Devil's lead with his first NHL goal.

Jaromir Jagr made it 3-0 to the Devils with a power-play goal early in the second period off of an assist from Travis Zajac. Jagr's goal ended up being the game-winner, which moved him past legend Gordie Howe into first place on the all-time NHL game-winners list.

Colin Greening would get Ottawa's first goal of the game three minutes after Jagr's tally, but Damien Brunner would make it 4-1 to New Jersey with about 30 seconds left in the second period. Milan Michalek scored a power-play goal eight minutes into the third period, which New Jersey would answer through Eric Gelinas' fourth of the season.

Gelinas and Brunner finished the game with a goal and an assist apiece for New Jersey. Veteran goalie Martin Brodeur ended up with a .920 save percentage after making 23 saves.
