The New Jersey Devils were able to take a 3-2 season series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes when they beat them 5-4 on March 8. It wasn't easy for New Jersey, though, as they lost a three-goal lead and needed a late Tuomo Ruutu goal to pull off the win.

New Jersey's Travis Zajac got the first goal of the game, scoring his 11th of the season and the lone goal of the first period. Jeff Skinner was able to tie the game with his 25th of the year at the 6:21 mark of the second period. New Jersey were able to swing the momentum their way soon after through on a Damien Brunner power-play goal and two goals by Adam Henrique. Jay Harrison got one back for the Hurricanes with a power-play tally to make it 4-2 Devils going into the third period.

4:41 into the final period, Nathan Gerbe scored a shorthanded goal for Carolina to get them within one of the Devils. Right wing Alexander Semin completed the comeback about eight minutes later to make it 4-4. It was all for naught, though, as Ruutu was able to score the game-winner thanks to a fantastic pass by defenseman Marek Zidlicky.

Ruutu had a goal and an assist in the win, while goalie Martin Brodeur was able to save 29 of the 33 shots he faced on the night.
