The Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadiens played a close game the last time they saw each other, with Gustav Nyquist scoring an overtime goal to give the Red Wings the 2-1 win. Fans expected a tight game considering both teams were battling it out for the top spot in the Atlantic, and that is exactly what they got.

The game was a defensive battle from the beginning, but Todd Bertuzzi was able to put the Red Wings on the board first with a power-play goal late in the opening period. After two full periods of great defense by both teams, Montreal captain Brian Gionta evened the score up with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game after goalie Peter Budaj was sent to the bench to get the extra man on the ice.

In the overtime period, once again it was solid defense that just about sent the game to the shootout. However, with just 28 seconds remaining in the extra period, Danny DeKeyser's shot was redirected by Johan Franzen right towards Nyquist, who slotted home the winner.

Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard only faced 20 shots in the game and saved 19 of them. Montreal fans actually booed at one point during the second period because their team only tested Howard two times during the entire 20 minutes.

Budaj also had a solid game in net, saving 28 of the 30 shots he faced.
