The New York Islanders overcame a three goal deficit to hand the struggling Minnesota Wild their fifth straight loss when these two faced off last time. They had lost the last eight of eleven games and coach Mike Yeo had this to say about the game, “It's hard to find the words for this because this is beyond disturbing right now.” The thing about being up by three and still losing the game especially when you are at home can put a bad taste in anybody's mouth, but even worse, the Islanders had a bad game as well.
The first period saw action early from Ryan Suter, putting the Wild up by one with a wrister. Then in the second period the Wild got off to an early start. Just 23 seconds into the period, Jonas Brodin revived a pass from Mikko Koivu's and scored on goalie Kevin Poulin. That was Koivu's 300th assist of his career. He added to that just a few minutes later when he assisted Nino Niederreiter on a score that put the Wild up by three. But later in the second, both John Tavares and Cal Clutterbuck would score, putting the Islanders back in the game before the second intermission.
The third period brought on four goals by the two squads. Three goals were scored by the Islanders, including one by Thomas Hicke, and two by Kyle Okposo, including the game winner at 14:12 into the third. Between the two Okposo goals, Justin Fontaine scored one at 13:45 to tie the game up, but Okposo's was the last goal that gave the Wild the loss.
