The Chicago Blackhawks wasted no time in showing why they finished the season with nine more points than the Minnesota Wild by beating them 5-2 in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals series. The Wild outshot the Blackhawks 32-22, but Chicago looked like the better team for the majority of the game.
The Blackhawks got on the board first through a Bryan Bickell power-play goal, which was his third goal in the playoffs so far. Chicago would double their lead in the second period with another goal with the extra man after Marian Hossa scored off of assists by Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy.
The Wild got one back when Clayton Stoner scored two minutes into the third period off an assist by Zach Parise. They would tie it up about five minutes later when Kyle Brodziak got his third tally of the playoffs. The Blackhawks took over from there on out and two goals by Patrick Kane and an empty-net goal by Bryan Bickell sealed the win for the hosts.
Hossa finished the game with a goal and two assists for Chicago, while Patrick Sharp and defenseman Brent Seabrook each finished with two assists. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford ended up with 30 saves and a .938 save percentage on the night.
Ilya Bryzgalov had yet another bad playoff game in net for the Wild by stopping just 17 of the 21 shots he faced for an .810 save percentage.
