The Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals last met less than a week ago in a tightly fought game that the Kings were able to win 2-1 after Marian Gaborik scored the the deciding goal in the shootout. The victory made coach Darryl Sutter the 18th coach in NHL history to notch 500 career wins.

The Kings' Anze Kopitar opened up the scoring late in the first period with his 22nd goal of the season. After a scoreless second period, Joel Ward scored his 22nd thanks to a nifty pass from rookie Evgeny Kuznetsov that helped the Caps tie the game.

In the shootout, Kuznetsov followed up Kopitar's miss with the first made goal. Jeff Carter quickly answered for the Kings by beating Jaroslav Halak. Alex Ovechkin, who is now 2 for 15 in the shootout this season, was unable to get the lead back for the Capitals. Gaborik got his shot by Halak, though, and Nicklas Backstrom wasn't able to answer, giving the Kings the win.

Trade deadline acquisition Halak had a solid game for Washington, stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick ended up with 22 saves on the night and became Los Angeles' all-time leader in wins for goaltenders.

The Caps were unable to gain ground in the playoff chase in the East, while the Kings kept their edge on multiple teams trying to get into the playoffs in the West.
