The San Jose Sharks were able to use a great first period to eventually beat the Los Angeles Kings 6-3 in Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series. The Sharks' sixth-best offense was able to overcome the Kings' top-rated defense despite being outshot and outhit.
Joe Thornton scored the game's first goal three minutes into the first period and put the Sharks ahead off assists from Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns. Tomas Hertl was able to tap in the next goal to double San Jose's lead, then Patrick Marleau made it 3-0 just before the end of the period.
It was more Sharks in the second period when Raffi Torres made it 4-0 off assists from Mike Brown and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Vlasic would get a goal of his own later in the period on the power play to give the Sharks a five-goal advantage.
The Kings were able to make a mini comeback in the third period through goals by Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov and Trevor Lewis. Brent Burns would end their hopes, though, with a minute left in the game to give San Jose the three-goal win.
Sharks goalie Antti Niemi had a solid game in net by stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced. Kings netminder Jonathan Quick had a rare off game and could only save 23 of the Kings' 28 shots on goal.
