The Florida Panthers were able to beat the New York Islanders 5-3 the last time they played thanks to a four-goal third period. In a season full of low points, this was certainly one of the games of the season for the Panthers.

The Islanders were the first team to score in this one when Thomas Vanek scored his 20th of the season. Vanek would quickly get his second and double New York's lead less than a minute later with a power-play tally. Thomas Vanek was easily the best player on the ice for the Islanders, scoring two goals and assisting on another. It took until the 18th minute of the second period to get the next goal, which was scored by Florida's Shawn Matthias to make it 2-1. However, less than a minute later, the Islanders would extend their lead to two again when Ryan Strome scored off of a pass from Vanek.

From that point on, it was all Florida. In the third period, the Panthers got goals from Marcel Goc, Matthias, Scottie Upshall and a power play goal by Jimmy Hayes to seal the win for the road team. The win ended the Panthers' four-game losing streak.

Matthias finished the game with two goals and an assist for the Panthers, while Upshall had two assists to go along with his third period goal. Florida goalie Tim Thomas ended up with 35 saves in the win.
