The Edmonton Oilers have been on a rocky road this season and the last time they played the St. Louis Blues that trend continued. The Oilers found themselves in early power-play trouble, which St. Louis capitalized on by scoring on two of the three PP opportunities to beat the Oilers for the seventh time in eight games, 5-2.
Chris Stewart took the first power-play advantage to score the only goal of the first period. St. Louis controlled the pace early in the game by only letting Edmonton get one shot off to their nine in the first eight minutes. Edmonton had one huge chance to score in the first when Jordan Eberle had a great look at a shot off a rebound, but Brian Elliot made the correct adjustments and was able to stop the attempt.
The second period saw a combined five goals by both teams that started with Edmonton. Nail Yakupov popped one in, but shortly after that the Blues managed to take back the lead. Mark Arcobello kept things alive by tying the game up. Two more goals by David Backes and Vladimir Tarasenko put the Blues up by 2 going into the second intermission. In the third, the Blues stuck to their game plan by adding one more goal to the scoreboard from Patrik Berglund. Goalie Brian Elliot improved to 13-1-2 while making 16 saves.
Since then, St. Louis has improved to the first place spot in the league while Edmonton will be showing up in St. Louis second to last in the league. Edmonton doesn't have much to lose in the game, but St. Louis is looking to improve their hold on their number one spot.
