Wednesday night, the Detroit Red Wings will visit the Verizon Center to take on the Washington Capitals. 

The Detroit Red Wings will come into this one fresh off a 4 - 2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night.  With the lackluster play of the Flyers, the Red Wings probably thought that they had a chance to take one on Philadelphia.  But the Flyers had other ideas.  The Red Wings scored the only goal of the 1st period but the Flyers scored the only goal of the 2nd to make it a 1 -1 game going into the 3rd.  That’s where the Flyers took a 2 -1 lead. And after the Red Wings tied it up again, the Flyers notched 2 late goals to pull away.  Although the Red Wings outshot the Flyers 37 – 17, they committed 6 penalties and went 0 for 3 on the power play. With some improved play, the Red Wings might have a shot against the Capitals.

The Washington Capitals took a 4 -2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night.  Vancouver was the last stop for the Caps on a 3 game road trip and the fatigue might have caught up with them.  The teams went scoreless in the 1st period but the Capitals opened the scoring in a wild 2nd period.  After they went up 1 - 0, Washington gave up 3 straight Vancouver goals.   But a late Washington goal cut the lead to 3 -2 going into the 3rd.  Vancouver sealed the win with a 3rd period goal at 18:59. Washington wasn’t sharp at all but it’s expected that with the rest and the home crowd behind them, they will put up a better effort against Detroit.
