The Detroit Red Wings were able to pull off the slim 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs when the teams last met on March 18. The win was a somewhat bittersweet one for the Red Wings, who lost defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to a broken finger and added him to their ever-growing list of injuries. The Red Wings, who had won just two of their previous 11 games coming into this one, were also without stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, among others.

Gustav Nyquist got the first goal of the game, scoring for the Red Wings in the middle of the first period off an assist by Kyle Quincey. Nyquist would also score Detroit's second goal on an unassisted tally two minutes into the third. Toronto's Jake Gardiner cut the lead in half with a power-play goal at the 8:24 mark of the third period before the Wings' Daniel Alfredsson made it 3-1 later in the period. James van Riemsdyk got the Maple Leafs back to within one with his 27th goal late in the third, but Toronto didn't have enough time to complete the comeback.

With his two goals in the game, Nyquist continued to be one of the nice surprises of Detroit's season. The third-year center scored his 18th and 19h goals of the season after scoring just four over the last two seasons combined. Jimmy Howard had 31 saves for the Red Wings, while Toronto's James Reimer had 28 saves in the loss.
