The Detroit Red Wings aren't known for their defense the way that the Boston Bruins are, but they were able to step it up in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup to get a 1-0 victory. The road win takes away the home ice advantage that the Presidents Trophy-winning Bruins had and makes this a much more interesting matchup than many anticipated.

After solid defense and goaltending was shown by both teams throughout the night, the Red Wings' veteran center Pavel Datsyuk was able to get his wrist shot to hit the back of the net with just four minutes remaining in the game. Datsyuk, who was playing through an injury to his knee, got a pass from Johan Franzen and was able to drive down the right side of the ice and put his wrister past two defensemen and Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask.

Minutes before the goal was scored, the Bruins had a great chance to take the lead when Milan Lucic deflected a shot that looked to be heading toward the back of the net. Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard was able to get a piece of the puck with his glove, though, and it just barely missed.

Howard finished the game with 25 saves and a well-deserved shutout, while Rask was able to save 23 of the 24 shots he faced for a .958 save percentage on the night.
