The last time these two teams matched up in December, the Dallas Stars were able to leave a 4-1 winner. The Stars started the game against the Philadelphia Flyers on a six game losing streak against them dating back to the 2008-2009 season. But with the help of Dallas goalie Dan Ellis, who had 27 saves, and a natural hat-trick and an assist by Tyler Seguin, the Stars broke that losing streak.
Starting off the first period was slow but eventually there was some action. With 18:51 gone in the first, the Flyer's Andrej Meszaros scored a goal from a scramble out in front of the net. The second period came and it was all Dallas. Seguin scored just 39 seconds into the second period to start out what would become a hat trick. Much of the period passed before Sequin would get another chance to score. With 17:43 gone in the second he got a shot in from the slot that found the back of the net. Then 40 seconds later, he saw his third chance to score with a shot that went off Jamie Benn's stick, but the goal was rewarded to Seguin for the hat trick. Another 30 seconds after that, the Stars would add one more goal by Valeri Nichushkin before going into the second intermission.
The third period brought about one more goal for Dallas from Cody Eakin, assisted by Antoine Roussel. It was a short-handed goal and put the Stars up by three. The Flyers played most of the game down a player when Zac Rinaldo received a misconduct penalty 1:15 into the first period. Dallas also had to play a man short through some of the game when Vernon Fiddler suffered a upper body injury in the second.
