For an upset to happen in the NHL playoffs, a team has to defend their home ice and hope to steal one on the road as the series advances. The Dallas Stars have stayed true to that blueprint after fighting off an early elimination to crawl back into contention, tying up their opening round matchup with the Ducks 2-2. Anaheim thought they had an easy road ahead of them after posting a 4-0 lead 9:00 into the second period of game one but Dallas fought back to score the next 3 and even in defeat showed they were in it for the long haul.
The Stars had hopes of stealing home ice after notching a goal 7:40 into game two but this time it was Anaheim who scored three straight to go on to win 3-2 as -161 favorites. The Ducks were efficient, scoring their 3 goals on only 19 shots compared to 36 by Dallas and were led by Ryan Getzlaf who had a goal and assist for the 2nd straight game.
Game 3 shifted back to Dallas and saw the Stars favored (-106) despite facing the 0-2 series hole. Anaheim may have been a tempting bet but Dallas didn't let that wager breathe as they scored goals in every period for a 3-0 shutout win. Kari Lehtonen stopped all 37 shots he faced for the first postseason victory in his career.
Anaheim looked to steal a road win in game 4 as +103 underdogs after taking a 2-0 lead into the 1st intermission. Dallas regrouped and scored 2 goals in each of the remaining periods for a 4-2 win that tied the series. The Ducks were without Teemu Selanne, who was a healthy scratch, and captain Ryan Getzlaf missed the game after suffering a slap shot to the face earlier in the series. Getzlaf is day-to-day as the series shifts back to Anaheim Friday night.
