The last time the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens met in November, the Canadiens were able to get a 3-2 win. David Desharnais of the Canadiens had been having a rough season, but in a shootout win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Desharnais was able to break through. He was able to find the back of the net in the only goal of the shootout which gave him his first goal of the season.

The first goal of the game came from R.J. Umberger at 15:33 into the first. He fired a shot from the left-wing that Peter Budaj could not see due to being screened, and put the Blue Jackets up by one. Then after a scramble that left Budaj somewhat confused, Artem Anisimov was able to find a loose puck and put one more on the board for the Blue Jackets. The Canadiens jabbed back with a goal of their own, scored by Alex Galchenyuk with just a few seconds left to go in the first.

In the second, the Canadiens tied the score with a goal by Lars Eller on a power-play at 7:34 into the second and that would be the last goal of regulation. A shootout would ensue, where the Blue Jackets would come up empty-handed. The Canadiens missed their first chance with Alex Galchenyuk shooting, but would get the help they needed from Desharnais, who came in and netted a hard shot on Curtis McElhinney's stick side.
