When they last played the Montreal Canadiens, the Colorado Avalanche added win number six to their winning streak, to make that two six game winning streaks early in the season. Helping the Avalanche along was goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who made 29 saves against the Canadiens, giving him a 12-1 start and the best start in the team's 18 seasons in Colorado.
The first period was hard fought and both goalies Giguere and Peter Budaj had keys saves to keep the scoreboard scoreless going into the first intermission. The second period brought a little bit of action when Marc-Andre Cliche passed the puck down the ice to a fresh Gabriel Landeskog, who was just starting his shift. Landeskog stopped at the left circle and took a slap-shot that passed right over the shoulder of Budja's and into the net at 11:14 into the second, making it 1-0.
The second period brought on a power-play goal by Brendan Gallagher that tied up the game and broke the 22 consecutive penalty kill streak that Colorado was holding onto. After that it was all Colorado, with three more goals by Nathan MacKinnon, assisted by Landeskog and Jan Hejda; another one came from Ryan O'Reilly, and the last one came from P.A. Parenteau, assisted by Matt Duchene and Andre Benoit.
Adam Foote, who put 19 years into the league and was said to be one of the toughest players to play the game, had his jersey retired in the ceremony before the game.
