When the Colorado Avalanche last played the Edmonton Oilers, they were able to use a three-goal second period to pull off the home win. The Avalanche spent just two minutes in the penalty box all game, while the Oilers were put on the penalty kill for a total of 17 minutes in the loss.

Oilers left wing Taylor Hall was able to put his team on top at the 14:50 mark of the first period off of assists from Jeff Petry and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Tyson Barrie tied it up for Colorado just one minute into the second period with a power-play tally. After a Nugent-Hopkins goal made it 2-1 Edmonton, Ryan O'Reilly scored his 11th of the season for the Avalanche off of a pass from Nathan MacKinnon.

The turning point in the game came near the end of the second period when Colorado center Maxime Talbot was able to score a shorthanded goal to give his side the lead. After the Oilers went on the power play, Marc-Andre Cliche was able to get the steal and found Talbot, who made a backhand goal. It was the 16th time in Talbot's career that he scored a shorthanded goal.

Matt Duchene was able to score an empty-net insurance goal for the Avalanche late in the third period to give Colorado the 4-2 win.

Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov had 27 saves in the win.
