New Jersey has to get hot in their last 19 games if they want to make the playoffs and so far out of the Olympic break they're playing like it. The Devils have scored 5, 6, and 4 goals in their three wins and their only loss was to the always tough San Jose Sharks.
A team that has lost to about everybody they've played in the last month is the Carolina Hurricanes. Their Tuesday night overtime 3-2 victory over the Sharks was the first in five games for the Hurricanes. They're a respectable 27-26-9 on the year and only 6 points out of the playoff race but it's a foregone conclusion that Carolina will be spending the postseason at home, especially after posting only 2 wins in their last 10.
When New Jersey visited Carolina earlier in the year they were able to skate out with a relatively easy 5-2 win. The Hurricanes actually held a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd period before New Jersey notched 4 straight goals. Carolina managed only 18 shots on goal in front of their home crowd, which needs to change if they want to find success in New Jersey.
On that November 29th game Carolina was actually favored at -110, most likely because the Hurricanes notched a 4-3 victory in New Jersey two days earlier. That day Devils bettors were able to cash in at +102 and look to do so again Saturday as the teams play their rubber match in the season series.
