What looked like a good matchup on paper turned into a thrashing as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Florida Panthers 5-1 in their last meeting in early February. The Hurricanes have found a way to dominate the Panthers over the years when playing at home, with this game giving them a 30-7-4 record against their old division foes.

The Hurricanes were able to get two goals in quick succession in the middle of the first period. Riley Nash scored his eighth of the season at the 9:17 mark, and Alexander Semin added one of his own less than two minutes later.

Nick Bjugstad got the Panthers their one and only goal later in the first period, but Brett Bellemore was able to answer for the Canes with a minute and a half left in the period. Jiri Tlusty gave Carolina a 4-1 lead with the lone goal of the second period, then Andrej Sekera finished off the scoring with a power-play goal in the third.

Carolina's offense certainly had the better game of the two teams, but their goalie had plenty of work to do, too. He ended up with 34 saves in the game for a fantastic .971 save percentage. Florida's netminder Tim Thomas didn't have as much luck, stopping just 10 of the 14 shots he saw before being pulled for backup Scott Clemmensen.
