Carolina had suffered a seven-game losing streak at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets and they were ready to break that cycle the last time these two teams played each other. With a solid performance from goalie Anton Khudobin, who had 22 saves and some much needed third period participation from the Staal brothers, Eric and Jordan, the Hurricanes broke that streak with a 3-2 victory.

Columbus controlled Carolina early in the first with two goals that were 17 seconds apart and less then 3 minutes gone on the clock. Derek Mackenzie scored off a rebound from Fedor Tyuntin's wrist shot that bounced off of Khudoblin, that put the Blue Jackets up by one. Shortly after the next face-off the Hurricanes turned over the puck, and it eventually made it to an all alone R.J. Umberger in front of the net and he was able to take advantage, giving the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead.

The second period saw no goals, but the third period was all Carolina. In the second half of the third period, goalie Sergie Bobrovksy would see more action than he wanted. With 8:42 remaining, Alexander Semin set up Eric Staal with a pass that he controlled and then beat Bobrovsky between the legs. Just one minute later, Staal would receive a pass from Jiri Tlutsy that he also turned into a goal to tie the game. Jordan Staal then got involved when he came into the zone against defenseman Ryan Murray. He cut to the middle of the ice and backhanded one past Bobrosky for the game winning goal.
