On Thursday night, the Carolina Hurricanes will try to get a bit more out of their struggling defense when they take on the Calgary Flames. Calgary won both of their games against the Hurricanes in 2013 by a combined score of 4-1.

The Hurricanes remained winless through five games after losing 3-1 to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night. In that game, the Hurricanes scored late in the first period on a power play tally, but they were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Left wing Jiri Tlusty is currently the top scorer on the Hurricanes with four goals, and he also has one assist. Center Riley Nash has one goal and is the team leader with two assists. Goaltender Anton Khudobin has started three games this season and has a .912 save percentage and a 2.64 GAA.

On Tuesday night, the Flames scored a late goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning to force overtime, but they ended up losing 2-1 in the extra period. Both teams had 22 shots in the game, but the Flames were certainly the more aggressive team, outhitting the Lightning 21 to 11.

Left Wing Mason Raymond has been the Flames' top performer through eight games, scoring five goals and assisting on two more. Center Joe Colborne hasn't scored a goal yet this season, but he does lead the team with six assists. Goaltender Jonas Hiller has been solid in his four starts this season, going 2-2-0 with a 2.22 GAA and a .942 save percentage.
