On Jan. 18 of this year, the Calgary Flames traveled to Rogers Arena to take on the Vancouver Canucks in what turned out to be a tight one that went to a shootout.
This one started off a bit differently. Bob Hartley sent his fourth line out to take the ice for the opening face off and Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella did the same. Then there was chaos as the entire line for both squads squared up and five fights broke out. When the game ended, Tortorella was on television trying to get into the Flames locker room to confront Hartley. Contrary to what has been written, there was a hockey game on this night.
For the Canucks, Ryan Kesler scored in the second period and Yannick Weber tallied his own goal in the third. The Canucks also got 31 saves out of goalkeeper Roberto Luongo in his return from an injury.
Mark Giordano and Matt Stajan scored for the Flames. There were no goal in overtime and the game went into a shootout.
In the shootout, Christopher Higgins ended up breaking the 1-1 tie and ended in the game in the Canucks favor.
In the last 10 meetings between these two teams Vancouver is 8-2 and has won five straight over Calgary. The 'over' is 3-3 with three pushes.
It's been a different tune over the last month and the Flames have been playing better than the slumping Canucks. The Canucks had lost nine of 10 as of March 4 and they'll be looking to get back to their winning ways when they face the Flames again in what should be an interesting meeting between the two.
