Thursday night, the Calgary Flames will continue their road trip with a stop at the Amalie Arena to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Calgary Flames stepped it up in the late stages of their Tuesday night game with the Washington Capitals and came away with a 4 -3 overtime victory.  The scoring started midway through the 1st period when the Flames took the 1 -0 lead.  Washington tied it up about a minute later and that’s where the game stood after one period.  In the 2nd, the Flames went up 2 – 1 but that lead didn’t hold long as Calgary surrendered 2 goals to close out the 2nd.  Down 3 – 2, the Flames battled back and with a Markus Granlund goal at 14:50, the game was knotted up again. The tie didn’t last long into overtime as Sean Monahan netted the game winner at 4:17 in.  Calgary seems to get their goals late in games but that strategy isn’t going to work for them all season.   They will need to get more goals early on to prevent the need for late game heroics.

The Tampa Bay Lightning used some late game heroics to get past the Washington Capitals too when they got a 4 -3 win on Saturday night.  The game was a back and forth affair the entire way.  When the Lightning opened the scoring in the 1st, the Capitals answered.  When the Caps took the lead early in the 2nd, the Lightning answered with 2 goals to go up 3 – 2.  But Washington closed out the period with a tying power play goal.  Jason Garrison got the eventual game winner for Tampa Bay early in the 3rd and the Lightning were able to hold off Washington for the rest of the way.  Tampa Bay should be well rested for Thursday’s game and that should give them a slight edge.
