The last time these two New York teams played against each other was in early October. On the brink of hitting a club-high eight game losing streak, the Sabres put together a late game comeback to get to overtime and press a shootout. The Sabres came out on top of the shootout and broke their losing streak with a 4-3 victory.

Frans Nielsen scored the first goal and the only goal of the first period for the Islanders. Three goals were scored in the second period. Both Tyler Ennis and Thomas Vanek scored for the Sabres. Vanek took advantage of a power-play opportunity to score and tie the game up. Matt Martin scored for the Islanders in between Ennis' and Vanek's scores. In the third, Matt Moulson took advantage of a power-play and gave the Islanders the lead. However, with 2:01 left in the game, Marcus Foligno scored a tying goal to send the game into overtime.

With no outcome in overtime, the two teams headed into a shootout. Matt Moulson scored on Matt Miller on the first attempt and that would be it for the Islanders. Thomas Vanek of the Sabres returned fire and got one past Evgeni Nabokov, tying the shootout up 1-1. Tyler Ennis, who also scored earlier would add one more point to the board with a quick shot beating Nabokov again. John Tavares had a chance to keep things going for the Islanders, but failed when he was stopped by Ryan Miller to end the game.
