The last time the Sabres and the Hurricanes met, the Sabres were operating much the same way they are now, in last place. Still, Goalie Ryan Miller played outstanding for the Sabres with 32 saves and 2 assists, helping break the Sabres' eight game losing streak.

The first period was scoreless, but that was broken in the second period by the Sabres' Christian Ehroff on a power-play goal assisted by Drew Stanford and Ryan Miller. Carolina struck back with a goal of their own when Eric Staal put one right in between Millers legs with 5:54 left in the second. The third period would see a total of three goals. Tyler Ennis started things off for Buffalo with a score, followed by Carolina's Alexander Semin scoring to tie the game. And then with 44 seconds left in the game, Christian Ehroff was assisted by Miller again,  and came through with the go-ahead goal by scoring his second goal of the night to hand Carolina their first lost to the Sabres in seven games.

Although Carolina played a strong game, the story of the game was Ryan Miller. Carolina out shot the Sabres 38 to 18, but still could not manage to slip enough goals past Miller. Despite his all-star performance he was traded shortly after. The Sabres also found help in two players that were out due to upper body injuries; both LW Matt Moulson, who missed 4 games and C Cody McCormick who missed 24 games, returned to the ice.
