When Calgary last played against the Buffalo Sabres, goalie Karri Ramo made 26 saves for the Flames to help take the win 2-1, while creating a three game win streak. The game was a hard nosed game that saw no scores in the first or second period. The close scoring opportunities came when the Sabres nearly scored eleven minutes into the game.

Karri Ramo lost sight of the puck in his crease with a lot of sticks in there slapping away. Luckily, Matt Stajan knocked the net off its moorings before Ville Leino could score. An almost goal for Calgary came when the puck went in the net, but was eventually disallowed for having too many men on the ice and instead of a goal the Sabres were rewarded a power-play. Both Zemgus Girgensons and Tyler Myers for the Sabres had shots go off the post in the second period, while both teams struggled to find quality shots on goal.

Things spiked up in the third when Matt Moulson of the Sabres got one through early, assisted by Girgensons and Christian Ehrhoff. Calgary returned fire with a goal of their own. Paul Byron received a quick pass from Chris Butler and handled it well before tying the game up with a goal. The game proceeded to overtime where Matt Stajan, assisted by Paul Byron scored just 43 seconds into the overtime session to give his team the win. Calgary had four power-play opportunities and Buffalo had five, but neither team was able to take advantage.
