The last time they played the Boston Bruins, the New Jersey Devils took advantage of power-play opportunities including scoring two power-play goals 23 seconds apart to take the lead and give them a victory of 4-3. The Bruins gave the Devils seven power-play opportunities throughout the game in which they cashed in on four of them. This is a game where the Bruins can truly blame their loss on their penalties, because the Devils' only goals in the game came while running on a power-play.

The Bruins got off to a quick start by scoring three in the first period. Two back-to-back goals by Torey Krug and Jarome Iginla came in at 7:52 and 9:19 in the first, giving them a two goal lead. The Devils disrupted that 2 goal lead with one of their own, scored by Adam Henrique on a power-play. But with 56 seconds left, the Bruins would strike again with a goal from Milan Lucic making their lead 3-2 going into the first intermission.

The Devils came out in the second period and defended well and put plenty of pressure in the attack zone. Then a Bruins' late second period penalty handed another chance for the Devils to score with an advantage, but this time with a 6-on-3 with a pulled goalie. Assisted by Patrik Elias and Michael Ryder, Marek Zidlicky took a shot from the point that beat goalie Tuukka Rask with 1:08 to play. After that the ice was restored back to a 5-on-4, where Andy Greene finished off the Bruins scoring a goal with 19:15 to play.
