Whenever Peyton Manning and Tom Brady face off, I'm just as excited as everyone at the beginning of the week, but by game time I am pretty much fed up with all the talk surrounding the two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks and generational peers. That said, I am disappointed Manning and Brady won't play in Sunday's AFC Championship Game in Foxboro. It would have been their 17th all-time meeting and perhaps the last in the playoffs (New England is at Denver next regular season). Now we may never see them on the same field again as Manning decides whether or not to retire.

The divisional round wraps up Sunday late afternoon in Denver in a matchup between the Colts and Broncos that oddsmakers believe will be the highest scoring of the four games, and I tend to agree. And what a great story line we might have here. Could this be Peyton Manning's last best chance to win a Super Bowl at age 38? How ironic would it be if Manning's replacement in Indy, and perhaps in the NFL's overall quarterback pecking order, Andrew Luck, was the guy to finish off Manning's Super Bowl chances?

Probably the second-biggest was when the 18-0 Patriots were stunned by the wild-card Giants in Super Bowl XLIII -- the game of David Tyree's incredible helmet catch (the last catch of his NFL career).

Just one upset in the NFL's wild-card round of playoffs, and I'm not even sure it was a huge surprise when Baltimore beat Pittsburgh 30-17, with the Ravens as the only road winners of the four games. That was also the only game I picked wrong, although I thought the Steelers' Le'Veon Bell would play when I wrote that preview early last week. Without him, the Steelers clearly are a very different team, and it showed.

For about a decade there, Ravens-Steelers was easily the NFL's most physical and heated rivalry. It has lost a bit of steam with the recent retirements of emotional stars like Hines Ward, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, or other guys moving to other teams. It's still a Top-5 rivalry in the NFL, but Saturday night's wild-card game could be the last hurrah in some ways because two key Pittsburgh defenders who were big parts of the rivalry's heyday, linebacker James Harrison and safety Troy Polamalu, might not be back next year.

No shock whatsoever that the Colts repeated as AFC South champions. They were heavy preseason favorites and never much in danger of not winning the division. Indy was two games behind Houston after two weeks, but there was never much worry there.

I'd like to tell you that I had both Arizona and Carolina making the playoffs back in the spring. That would be 100 percent false. I absolutely expected the Panthers to slide way back from last year's 12-4 mark. Guess I wasn't totally off the mark as Carolina won five fewer games, but it still won the laughable NFC South -- becoming the first team to ever repeat in that division. The Cats also join the 2010 Seahawks as the only clubs in a non-strike shortened season to finish below .500 as the division champion. I had Carolina no better than third behind New Orleans and Atlanta, which actually would have happened had the Falcons won in Week 17.
